13 Things I Learned On My Trip

Thirteen Things about RG

1. Friends are an amazing gift. Friends who give you anti anxiety meds when they learn you are terrified of flying are worth their weight in gold!

2. Turbulence is groovy. {Only when #1 is applied}

3. Baby planelets are too small for a normal size human being...let alone my 6'4" Cookie. {thats my hubby's new nickname}

4. Before a trip of any kind, no matter how somber or impromptu, retouch your dye job. Spending several days with multiple family members commenting on a few stray grey hairs does not equal fun.

5.If the rental car company offers you a GPS, take it! {This one I knew already-but men are stubborn creatures who would rather wander around lost than admit they need help}

6. For a gathering that may consist of several hours on your feet, wear comfortable shoes. Pretty, yes-but comfortable. When will I learn?

7. All you need to get by in any situation is one pair of black pants and friends/siblings with good taste. Thank you Sis!

8. I learned I still really dislike burials on a gut level and reaffirmed my desire to be cremated. On that note I also learned I can get through one for family.

9. I learned that my sainted, perfectly amazing grandmother had a fun, feisty and sometimes silly side with her friends and sister...and it only made me love her more.

10. I learned that it is never too late to reunite with relatives.

11. I learned that if you step out in the morning with your husband in your pjs to look at the snow, make sure that you havent accidentally locked yourself out without an extra key. {long, embarrassing, COLD story}

12. I believe that the friend with the survival kit referred to in #1 deserves just one more mention ;)

13. There's no place like home.

I wanna know more about the locked out in the snow thing. Think it could show up in a story one day? Thanks for the giggle.

It was a bit more embarrassing than any heroine could take. Trapped outside for over an hour while someone drove to find and return a key so we could get back inside. Thank goodness for phones-and my Cookie was very heroic-he stuck my icy feet in his shirt when my tootsies lost all feeling. :)

I'm with you on the dye job! It's either that or "hey, did you gain some weight since we saw you last?" Why does anyone, including family, feel it's okay to point these things out??

ROFL about the hair coloring thing...yeah, they looooove pointing out how many little grey hairs you're getting. LOL

Poor Mr. Cookie Monster on the plane! I feel bad for him...at least you had drugs!

Elle and rhonda-yep. Although I think they felt worse than I did. Apparently my going grey just made them feel older. :)

Crystal-I know my poor baby. He had a great sense of humor though. Even when his cheek was pressed against the ceiling as we walked down the aisle. Even when every pocket of air made his knees bump his chin. I think he was just as elated as I was that I was drugged. LOL

Aww, RG. Sounds like your days lately have been filled with such humor and sadness. At least there's been both? :)
And how did he put your feet in his shirt? I got the impression that you were standing while locked out? LOL

Jennifer-
I am thankful for the laughter. About the feet. Well after running around, soaking my fuzzy socks in the snow and wet grass as I searched in vain for a spare key-we went back to the open screened porch-I call it the icebox-and sat on the teensy wicker sofa huddled together for protection until help arrived.

Oh I suck at flying. I've done so much of it now I've learned that as long as I have a good book, I can survive. That and don't check luggage if you can help it.

What a great list! Love pissing off the GPS lady by making a wrong turn, and if you were grey by your mid-20's, family don't bother commenting - they do if it's not there :-)

How wonderful it must have been to find out this new side of your grandma...it's never to late to learn something new about family either.

And congrats on Cookie - he's a keeper!

Tilly-He is. He handled everything like a pro, so happy he came with me.

Jenna-yeah you know, one step away from a propeller, aisles only as big as one of my thighs, a little plane the size of a sardine can. Baby planelet. LOL

LOL on the hair. It has to be better than the time I "accidentally" colored my blonde hair pink. Temporary my @&*(*&!

Oh no they did not comment on your gray hairs! Didja comment back on the black hair growing just under her chin?

And your poor dude, planes and anyone over 5'7 are a terrible combo.

I hate flying with a purple passion, RG. And I would also vastly prefer cremation, while Mr. Robin prefers burial. So I'm hoping either I go first or we go together so my urn can be buried with him.

I'm glad you gleaned some new insights into your grandmother. It's startling to realize how much we don't know about loved ones sometimes, isn't it?

Eek, the hair coloring thing - it makes you want to deck the speaker or at least count their gray hairs.

robin-so glad you can relate. But I have to tell you-if I ever need to fly again-I now know I can. Thats a big relief.

Lauren-LOL-yeah, he definitely deserves some kudos

Shelley-this seems to be the consensus. Yeah-I could have gone all day without hearing about the signs of my aging

well you know, you could have been naked. Ice and nekkid do not mix, esp while waiting long hours for help.

I know, I know - I'm behind in making the rounds. Better late than never, right...? Glad you got through the funeral and being locked out in the cold okay. And thank you for reminding me that sometimes it's not so bad when you don't see relatives for a really long time... ;)
